In 2020 there are over 100 different ways that Google scores websites and ranks them to improve their standings on the search engine results page, but one of the best methods is still to build good value backlinks to your site and build your domain authority.

There are many ways to build great backlinks and several ways to build low-quality backlinks, but Google is getting more and more clever every day, and building the best backlinks for your site need to be done right, to do that we need to focus on value over numbers.

There are, broadly, two ways to get backlinks: actively and passively. Passively is the easiest, by creating great content that generates natural backlinks, but this can take many months, if not years, to yield results and there are no guarantees that it will work.

Active backlink building covers all kinds of backlink building that involves purposely going out to get links, from advertising to guest posting, buying backlinks, and using backlink SEO tools to do the job.

While creating great content and encouraging natural passive backlinks is vital, there is no reason to hang around and hope when you can help to speed up the process by having an active backlink building strategy.

The Right Tools

SEO is a technical minefield, and it’s very easy to waste time on techniques that have little or no value or impact on your SEO rankings. Building backlinks can be one of the biggest time wasters if it’s not done right, but thankfully several tools can help you to build your active backlink building strategy and make it successful.

Backlink solutions and tools do come with the caveat that they work for some marketers and many of the tools mentioned are very good when used correctly, but this is not a guarantee that they will work for you. As always, spend some time learning how each tool works, read the instructions, and keep your own analytics.

Check My Links

One of the best ways to convince other sites to link to yours is by being helpful. Check My Links is a Google Chrome extension that will scan a website and help you to identify any broken links on a site.

Once you have identified some broken links, it’s up to you to contact the site owner to let them know and suggest maybe they switch their broken link out for a working one from your site.

Ubersuggest

This is one of the most popular back links tools in the SEO world and one of the most trusted tools too. Ubersuggest can help you discover information about your own backlinks (whether or not they have high quality or toxic links) but it can also help you to scan your competition too.

Scanning your competition is important, as you’ll be able to see what’s working for them and align your strategy to improve on their strategy.

Linkbird

Many users use Linkbird as their go-to all-in-one SEO tool because it allows you to dive deep into your own SEO highs and lows whilst being a great tool for link building.

The key with Linkbird is to do link building as part of your content strategy, focusing both on active and passive link building which will lead to better quality links overall.

Pitchbox

It’s often been said that you can’t be innovative and efficient at the same time, but Pitchbox breaks that rule!

The main aim of the game with Pitchbox’s backlink software is to automate the outreach you’ll be doing to build your linking profile. Armed with automatic follow-ups, you’ll be able to find link building opportunities that are worth their weight in gold, or at least ad revenue!

Automation isn’t all they do either, Pitchbox gives you some amazing templates to ensure that your outreach doesn’t look like everyone else’s and provides your brand with an eye-catching way to catch the attention of your new contacts.

Whitespark

If you’re a blogger, you need to be using Whitespark. This is a local SEO focused tool targeted especially at niche site bloggers to help them find guest blogging, reviews, citations, and all kinds of other blogger related opportunities.

Whitespark is great at doing broad-spectrum SEO, but it shines when set to work with local SEO search traffic.
